Psychic Ills – ‘January Rain’
Brooding, throttling, foreboding…Pursuing some empty sense of purpose through the night until darkness starts to edge away – this song speaks to me despite the many characteristics that may tie it to a genre I am not fond of. I’ve said it before: ‘post-rock’ (or even worse, ‘math-rock’) is a pet peeve of mine. You know the bands I mean: the instrumental acts who focus on the ‘dynamic’ of the group by fiddling with their instruments at length, chasing the same tired crescendo of crashing chords in the knowledge out there that some people will hail it as a stormy ‘epic’.
But they’re all the same: the tracks, the bands…all interchangeable. I’ve been to their shows, I’ve given them chance after chance, I’ve even appreciated their ‘tightness’ and cohesion…but too much of it comes down to imitation, repetition, and bandwagon-hopping.
But there’s something menacing about Psychic Ills, a muscle, a voice, a different take on things that I hope will not only give these other posers a run for their money, but chase them out of the picture altogether.
