Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings – ‘100 Days, 100 Nights’

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings was great fun last night. The band is a slick outfit and as tight as you’d expect them to be. Jones, on the other hand, is quite the show-woman. Apart from the stunning vocals, the woman likes to shake it, knows how to work the crowd, and maintains the perfect tempo throughout.

It’s also nice to see a band take every facet of their performance seriously (a roadie could frequently be seen rushing out just to move the bassdrum mic a centimetre closer). The only letdown for me came after I had to make a pitstop in the bathroom and realised there was no way I’d regain my place up the front; relocating closer to the bar, the atmosphere just wasn’t the same. I was disconnected from the action, no flailing limbs accidentally smacking me across the face, instead just the overbearing idle talk of people more interested in having a few pints.
