Solomon Burke – Don’t Give Up On Me
I saw Solomon Burke live at the Barbican the other day and although I was there mainly to see Breakestra, I was unexpectedly blown away by his performance. As far as modern soul gigs go, this was the real deal: the music successfully managed to avoid the ‘cheese’ factor seemingly intrinsic to most heritage acts, Burke’s voice was in great shape and he had the audience in the palm of his hand. Few people can claim to have had songs written especially for them by the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Brian Wilson, Eric Clapton and Elvis Costello, but Solomon Burke is every bit the soul legend. The man has 89 grandchildren – I think he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to love.
