School of Seven Bells – Iamundernodisguise
Brooklyn dream-pop trio comprising identical twin singers Alejandra and Claudia Deheza as well as former Secret Machines guitarist Benjamin Curtis. Gathering quite a bit of hype from those destined-for-greatness-in-2009 lists and drawing comparisons to Kate Bush and the Cocteau Twins…but I can’t help be reminded of the synchronised harmonies of those other NY-based twin sisters, The Pierces, who sing with a similar detached vocal style. Their debut album Alpinisms is out now on Full Time Hobby.

Hjaltalín – Traffic Music
Triumphant Icelandic pop put to great effect in this mixed-media animation that’s as colourful as it is incomprehensible. Hjaltalin is a nine piece ensemble who were singled out for praise after Jim Carroll’s recent scouting mission to the Eurosonic festival showcase in Holland AND crowned ‘Brightest Hope’ at last year’s Icelandic music awards. On the strength of this track, they promise to live up to those expectations. Their album Sleepdrunk Seasons is out now on Kimi records.

Raw Power guitarist James Williamson supplanted the visceral bombast of the Stooges with a blend of tender ballads and gritty, Stones-like riffs in a last-ditch bid to focus Iggy’s flagging career. Continue Reading »

Peasant – Those Days
23-year-old Damien DeRose, whose music first appeared on here last year, finally releases his second album, On the Ground, today. His voice is shrill but warm, the writing introspective but lightweight enough to drfit effortlessly through a scattering of affecting moments, as idiosyncratic as they are melodic. Last month his Daytrotter session surfaced, leaving behind a set of live MP3s free to download.
