Micachu – Golden Phone

I must admit it has taken me a while to get into the sound of Michacu, whose singer (21-year-old East London student Mica) everyone in music seems to be talking about [interview with Grizzly Bear posted below]. A hyped-up album, a free mixtape and the endoresement of experimental producer Matthew Herbert has been enough for most to take an interest in this mix of angular compositions and leftfield pop, but for me it has been the gushing Tweets of Final Fantasy’s Owen Palett and GB’s Ed Droste that drew me back to discover a soothing quality in there somewhere. Bill Callahan – Eid Ma Clack Shaw

As Tweeted yesterday, Bill Callahan’s new album Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle is perfect for sunny Sunday road trips through the countryside. Aside from moments like Sycamore and his cover of In the Pines, in the past I’ve found Callahan’s half-spoken vocals and morose outlook to be uninviting…but this album is a feat: a cohesive and poetic outing that lulls and soothes effortlessly. A perfect listen for spring and a must-buy.

Peter Bjorn and John – Nothing to Worry About

After reading various previews of Peter Bjorn and John’s new album, Living Things, one might expect little more than an album of clanging industrial sounds, ambient field recordings, and gaps of silence in between. Such is the fuss that has been made over their alleged ditching of commercialised bubblegum pop for the challenge of the avant-garde. So it comes as quite a surprise that it’s not really that experimental – it’s just interesting. There are still plenty of hooks, but they’re part of a cohesive string of ideas which prove that pop can still be fun and original.
