Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

This is the title track from Deerhunter’s forthcoming EP, Rainwater Cassette Exchange, which is to be released digitally on 16 May and physically on 8 June through Kranky/4AD. It’s a laidback, fairly dub-tastic number which combines recognisable elements of Bradford’s solo work as Atlas Sound with the catchy pop-rock of last year’s Microcastle/Weird Era Cont., a double-feat that multiplied their audience considerably. A great title and a tantalising taste at another potential direction for the band; hopefully they will be performing more new material at their live dates next month in Dublin, London and the excellent Primavera festival in Barcelona. This track can be downloaded for free via GvsB. Continue Reading »

Thee Oh Sees – Thee Hounds of Foggy Notion

admin on Apr 17th 2009

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Just ordered this live DVD/CD set by Thee Oh Sees which captures them playing cleaned-up and slowed-down versions of their songs in a variety of unusual spots around San Francisco (there are two more videos below). Billed as “a return to their pre-Bedroom sound”, the set allows a chance for the songwriting to shine in its simplest form. Don’t forget, Help is out next week and if you haven’t heard it already, pick up a copy of The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In on purple vinyl. Continue Reading »

The Intelligence – Cheer Up Switch

You may want to turn down the volume for this one, because the cheer up switch is not the only effect being put to use here. The  songs of The Intelligence start off as abrasively as possible, but this one wails into overdrive, taking lo-fi garage to the extreme while throwing in a dance beat just to confuse your already pissed off neighbours as your speakers start to give way. The Intelligence will soon be embarking on a two-month European tour to promote Fake Surfers, the band’s fourth album, which is out on 26 May through In the Red. Continue Reading »

Pontiak – Laywayed

admin on Apr 16th 2009

Pontiak – Laywayed

Stomping, riff-heavy rock from Baltimore-based Pontiak, three brothers who mostly record in live takes and sound refreshingly unlike those other acts trying to retread the well-worn paths of psych-out masters only to end up sounding derivative and stale. Pontiak’s diversity means they avoid such creative cul-de-sacs, with slow, meditative workouts mixed in with a lyricism that seems transposed from a different genre entirely. Continue Reading »
