Zola Jesus – Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane)

Zola Jesus is a 20-year-old from Madison, Wisconsin who spent a decade learning operatic singing only to discover a slew of important albums and realise that her could abilities could be better applied elsewhere. The result is The Spoils LP: 10 tracks of barren and industrial compositions that drone alongside soaring vocals, trapped in reverb and full of Gothic imagery. Continue Reading »

Liam the Younger – Ode to Then

Liam the Younger – Ode to Then

New Jersey’s Liam the Younger is possibly my new favourite act. Over the course of two (free) albums, After the Graveyard and Clear Skies of Black River, his short and stripped-down home recordings hiss by without becoming repetitive or losing any of their colour – which is quite incredible when you think of the amount of artists who have tried the same thing. You can download their previous instrumental EP, &, for free here or if you’re anywhere near their hometown, make sure to catch them when they play with Kurt Vile and Espers at The Talking Head club on 11 August – looks like it will be a great show. Snake Flower 2 – No Way Home

With the weekend almost in sight, this is a good one to get the adrenaline flowing. It’s bitchin’ garage rock from California by way of Memphis and a stand out track on SF Surf Punk, a mixtape by Julie of The OMCD. The three-piece have released their debut album Renegade Daydream as well as a 7″ on Tic Tac Totally records, who also stock the likes of Wavves and So Cow. Continue Reading »
