Fan-made video for my favourite track on the Atlas Sound album, Logos, which is definitely worth tracking down. It almost seems Deerhunter cast-off; maybe that’s why I like it. A European tour begins in London’s Cargo on November 15th, concluding in Whelan’s in Dublin on 21st.

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange

This is the title track from Deerhunter’s forthcoming EP, Rainwater Cassette Exchange, which is to be released digitally on 16 May and physically on 8 June through Kranky/4AD. It’s a laidback, fairly dub-tastic number which combines recognisable elements of Bradford’s solo work as Atlas Sound with the catchy pop-rock of last year’s Microcastle/Weird Era Cont., a double-feat that multiplied their audience considerably. A great title and a tantalising taste at another potential direction for the band; hopefully they will be performing more new material at their live dates next month in Dublin, London and the excellent Primavera festival in Barcelona. This track can be downloaded for free via GvsB. Continue Reading »

Song of the Day: Lotus Plaza – Sunday Night

Lotus Plaza – Sunday Night

From the solo debut of Deerhunter’s Lockett Pundt, this is a dreamy take on vintage American r&b and doo-wop much  in the same vein as bandmate Bradford Cox’s solo act, Atlas Sound. The album as a whole blends together elements of glitch and shoegaze in a hypnotic, ethereal aesthetic best described (elsewhere) as “squinting into the haze”. The track These Years, for example, does a particularly good job of channelling the echo chamber effect of the Boards of Canada classic, Olsen.  The album, The Floodlight Collective, is enjoying a heap of gushing praisealready but will be officially released through Kranky records on 23 March.

I’ll Be Your Mirror: An Interview with Bradford Cox

admin on Nov 29th 2008

Dead band members, armed robbery, comas, confused sexuality, ‘poop journals’, self-loathing, child abuse, genetic disorders, nervous breakdowns and walkouts – this is the context that framed Deerhunter’s output in 2007. The music may have been good enough to stand on its own but, whether the listener was interested or not, it came with side stories.
