Motel Motel – Coffee (live)
If you could do with a trip to Whiskeytown, check out Motel Motel: a twanging rock band from New York with all the sounds of the south. They recently recorded a Daytrotter session and are on their way to the UK in September for the End of the Road festival. Continue Reading »

A Faulty Chromosome – Love Goes Home to Paris in the Spring
A nice cover version of one of my favourite titled songs, the Magnetic Fields’ Love Goes Home to Paris (original video below), by Texans A Faulty Chromosome. There can be no better description of their sound than: “a fuzzy mess of tremolo, hand-claps, 8-bit blips, water-damaged Mister Rogers records, mashed Casio chords and drum machine’d beats,” on their last.fm profile. AFC’S debut album, as an ex-anorexic’s six sicks exit, can be downloaded for free from their MySpace and the group have a live session that just appeared on Daytrotter. Continue Reading »

Local Natives – World News
These guys feel like an exciting find – and I fully expect them to catch plenty of attention during their eight shows this week at SXSW. All the right ingredients are there: soaring singalongs, thumping drums and simply great tunes. If their recent Daytrotter session wasn’t enough evidence that they’ve got a great live presence, check out their take on Simon & Garfunkel’s Cecilia in the video below.

Bon Iver – Flume (Daytrotter Session)
A live and perhaps even more haunting version of this track comes from a Daytrotter session of Justin Vernon and his band, now collectively known as Bon Iver. It’s easily the breakthrough album of the year and while everyone knows the story behind it by now, I quite like this little snippet from the accompanying write-up on Daytrotter’s site. So sit back, have a listen and a quick read:
Justin Vernon, or the formerly wounded man behind the wooded Wisconsin band Bon Iver, is – right now – one of the foremost authorities on bleeding hearts and then finding a way of making them better. And while there is a lot of material about the cool side of the pillow and the warm, emptiness of the mattress, there’s not as much material combining both the somberness of despair and the somberness of wanton hope. It’s hope all the same and, in time, it can be something fulfilling again. Continue Reading »
