‘Ex-Guru’ was one of my favourite tracks of 2007. It crammed everything that makes The Fiery Furnaces great into one song: clever wordplay, bombastic riffs, catchy melodies and a confoundingly frantic tempo. I’m Going Away, the Friedbergers’ eighth album, sees them in more plaintive form and while there are less lightning-bolt moments like ‘Ex-Guru, the pace spreads out the usual torrent of ideas, making it easier to lure more listeners in.
