Avi Buffalo – What’s In It For?
Avi Buffalo is an indie-pop four-piece based around the infectious ideas of teenage songwriter Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg. The group is from Long Beach, California, and their debut album will be out on Sub Pop sometime in the spring. Worth keeping an eye out for. Continue Reading »

Video: While You Wait for the Others (Cover)
admin on Jun 7th 2009
This is a Grizzly Bear cover version from the same “mysterious YouTuber” that Bradford Cox singled out for praise recently on his blog after discovering a cover of Rainwater Cassette Exchange. Like the other mysterious YouTube renditions of Two Weeks I posted in February, this guy has also covered Animal Collective and Panda Bear – as well as Beach House, Bon Iver and some original recordings. Check them all out, they’re well worth a listen on the headphones. If you keep an eye on the sidebar of related videos, you can go on a never ending trail of bedroom cover versions of similar tracks – like Deep Blue Sea and Turtle Island.

The Soundscapes – We’re All Made of Star Stuff
These two brothers sound convincingly bigger than any other guitar-drums duo I think of, but what makes them stand out if their melding together of canonical US and British indie influences from the late ’80s and early ’90s. Normally it’s either one or the other when it comes to indie emulation, so perhaps their upbringing in Brazil is responsible… Their debut album Freestyle Family is out now. Continue Reading »

Girls – Lust for Life
An undeniably catchy song about being fucked in the head, perfect for a Friday afternoon when the week has taken its toll and relief is just around the corner. Since last posting about Girls, the Californian duo seem to have become the toast of every indie act asked about their favourite new band…and they haven’t even released their debut yet! But in the meantime, you can download the two tracks featured on this site from here and catch the video for Morning Light below.

Song of the Day: The Antlers – Apple Orchard (Beach House)

The Antlers – Apple Orchard
Something tells me that relatively obscure indie cover versions may become a trend in 2009. Already we’ve had Scarlett Johansson giving Jeff Buckley’s Last Goodbye the X-Factor treatment and hype starlets Florence and the Machine reworking Beirut’s Postcards from Italy. But if that seems too sacrilege to bear, Brooklyn’s The Antlers show how it should be done: a beautiful, almost entirely a cappella take on Beach House’s Apple Orchard that both adds to the original and works as an eerie reinterpretation.
