Manfred Hübler & Siegfried Schwab – There’s No Satisfaction

In terms of songs that are guaranteed to put you in a good mood, ‘There’s No Satisfaction’ must rate pretty highly. Written for the soundtrack of a ‘70 vampire porno, I first became aware of this track when it was put (without any title) on a mix CD I received years ago. The reason I’m putting both of these songs together is that they demonstrate what mixes do best: allowing you to discover great songs that you would otherwise have never heard.

Marden Hill – Curtain

This one, for instance, comes from a new ‘kitsch’ mix by Sammy entitled Carnaby Chic – “one that girls who secretly ( or indeed openly ) wish they were Audrey Hepburn would love.” It’s a motif I find difficult to resist. Continue Reading »

The Muxtape of My Youth

admin on Jun 18th 2008

When the whole muxtape thing blew up a while back, I was reluctant to give it a go…mostly because I’m still doing them the old fashioned way and, well, you can only submit 12 tracks – all under 10mb each!

But eventually I decided to try and have a bit of fun with something that would fit the format. This is a compilation of many of my favourite songs as a kid within the span of a decade. There’s nothing indie, obscure or cool about it at all, really, but I think I’ve come up with the most entertaining combination possible while doing justice do my tastes as a knee-high rascal. Mix CD: A Divine Proclamation for Finishing the Present Existence

admin on May 16th 2008

At last! A new mix CD. The last two went down so well that I thought I’d stick to the same formula: one disc of bright, upbeat and uplifting songs, and the other of downtempo, dreamy and reflective moments. The only thing is it has taken me nearly four months to be happy with the track sequences. Tunes have come and gone, places rethought and reshuffled…until I eventually found the right balance between some of my favourite songs that have been featured here on the site this year. Mix CD: The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame – Outside Looking In

admin on Apr 9th 2008

Okay, so the induction of Madonna, queen of pop, into the rock and roll hall of fame ruffled more than a few feathers but I had no idea how many quality artists had been overlooked until now. Over at AOTM, all-star mixer Sammyg123 has put together a double-disc compilation of bands that are both eligible and worthy of the aforementioned honour. We’re not talking just MC5 and The Stooges here, it’s a journey through outstanding selections from soul, funk and even hip-hop…making for an excellent listen. Download here. The Mix Tape Revival

admin on May 1st 2007

So far this year, I’ve been getting back into the concept of mixtaping. This is partly due to my reading of the Thurston Moore-edited Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture and also due to various little articles that were popping up around the same time.
It was then that I found websites such as Art of the Mix, International Mixtape Project, and Tiny Mix Tape’s Mixtape Generator.
Art of the Mix itself is a long-running, established website home to daily submissions (some of which are available download), mix-of-the-week award, and encouraging user feedback.
