The first and most prominent song on Alela Diane’s first official release, “The Rifle” is striking not just for its glowing, tender qualitiy, but for its lyrics, as visual as they are eerie. Another folk artist from Nevada City who built up a following on the strength of her self-recorded CD-Rs, Diane’s first public performance came at the invitation of Joanna Newsom, and her recently re-released ‘The Pirate’s Gospel’ has been extremely well-received, seeing her share billings with the likes of The Decemberists and Vashti Bunyan.
